Skyscrapers
Walking along the Schiedamsedijk street in Rotterdam, I had this almost unobstructed view of the skyscrapers along the Boompjes street, bathing in the sunlight.

On the Wilhelmina quay in Rotterdam, where once the ships of the Holland America Line departed for Ellis Island, is now a cruise terminal.

Lost Luggage
The sculpture Lost Luggage Depot, on the Wilhelmina quay in Rotterdam. The sculpture, by Canadian artist Jeff Wall, is a monument to Dutch emigrants who sought a better life in the new world. It is placed at the very location where the ships of the Holland America Line once left for Ellis Island.

Delftse Poort, Rotterdam
We already saw this building yesterday, in the background of the Rotterdam Central Station photo. It's a skyscraper on the Weena street in Rotterdam, known as the Delftse Poort (Delft Gate). Until recently it was the highest skyscraper in The Netherlands, but it is surpassed by two new skyscrapers, both also in Rotterdam. The building is the headquarters of Nationale Nederlanden, one of the largest insurance companies in The Netherlands.

Rotterdam Central Station
I took this photo early in the morning, in Rotterdam Central Station. In the foreground you can see part of the train station, with a Dutch train on the left. In the background are the skyscrapers of the Weena street.

Destroyed City
A photo of the Destroyed City monument, a statue by Ossip Zadkine. The statue of a man without a heart symbolizes Rotterdam, the city that lost its heart during the bombings in World War II. We see it here from the back.

The skyline of Rotterdam
Not really the skyline of Rotterdam, but only of a small part of the city: the Erasmus bridge and a few skyscrapers along the Meuse river. If you plan to visit Rotterdam and want to see this skyline, go the Wilhelmina quay - that's where I took this photo.

The World Trade Center of Rotterdam
In the heart of Rotterdam, on the Coolsingel street, is the World Trade Center of Rotterdam. A few blocks away I could see its skyscraper, bathed in sunlight, between the nearby buildings.

The White House of Rotterdam
I took this photo in the old port of Rotterdam. The building on the right is known as the White House. Build in the late 19th century, the White House was the first skyscraper in The Netherlands, and with its ten floors and 43m / 141ft it was once the highest building in Europe.

Former head office of the Holland America Line
A detail of the former head office of the Holland America Line (HAL), on the Wilhelmina quay in the port of Rotterdam. Emigrant ships of the HAL departed from this quay, on their way to Ellis Island. The quay, and this HAL building, was often the last that emigrants saw and remembered of the old world.

Another photo of an Amsterdam canal: the Brouwersgracht canal, with boats on the water and typical Amsterdam canal houses on the banks. The bridge on the left leads to the Keizersgracht canal.

Canals in Amsterdam
Two Amsterdam canals cross on this photo: the Brouwersgracht and the Prinsengracht. On the left there is an old canal bridge, on the other side of the water you can see the traditional Amsterdam canal houses.

Bronze statuette of a woman
I discovered this statuette along the Singel canal in Amsterdam. I don't know who it is or why it is standing there - if you know, please leave a comment.

Canal houses
Another photo of Amsterdam. It looks like typical Amsterdam canal houses along a typical Amsterdam canal, but it is actually a river: The Amstel.

New year fruits
On New Year's Eve we have at least 13 different kinds of round fruits - a Filipino new year tradition. We start eating those on New Year's Day.
The photo shows a small selection of our fruits, including grapes and assorted berries. At the bottom are a few sharon fruits, something we never had before.
