San Juanico Bridge III

San Juanico Bridge

Another photo of the San Juanico Bridge. On this photo you can get an idea of the length of the bridge. I was already standing on the bridge, in one of the curves on the Samar side of the bridge, when I took this picture. The photo shows the straight Leyte end of the bridge.

San Juanico Bridge

The San Juanico Bridge, between Leyte and Samar

The San Juanico Bridge connects the islands Leyte and Samar. I've been told it's the longest bridge in the Philippines. At 2.1km (1.34 miles) it's certainly a long one.

River

A river on the island Samar, the Philippines

On the way back on our recent trip to Samar, we stopped for a few minutes to take a couple of photos of this river. Both banks are full of palm trees - not sure if these are coconut plantations.

A small fishing boat on a secluded, deserted beach somewhere on the island Samar, in the Visayas region in the Philippines. The boat seems to be freshly painted, maybe it's still new.

Looking for shellfish

Looking for shellfish in the Visayas

While I was busy taking photos, this gentleman called out to me to let me take his photo, and he posed for me when I did so. He was busy collecting shellfish in the shallow waters on the coast of a Visayan island - presumably to sell, or possibly for his family dinner later that day.

Children playing on the beach

Children playing on the beach

This photo is taken in Samar, in the Visayas region in the Philippines, on a remote beach. Children from a nearby village are playing on the beach. Or maybe they are looking for shellfish, to sell or for the family dinner.

Pilgrims in Sulangan

Pilgrims in Sulangan

The church in Sulangan that we saw last week is a popular destination for pilgrims. That is mostly for its shrine of St Anthony of Padua (locally known as San Antonio de Padua) - several miracles are attributed to it.

On this photo we see pilgrims in Sulangan eager to touch a statue of Jesus carrying the cross.

Balangiga

Monument for the Balangiga affair

We're about to return from the Visayas region in the Philippines, where we have limited internet access. You can soon see our photos here, but for now I share photos from previous trips.

Monument for the Balangiga affair in Balangiga, Samar.

The Balangiga affair, also known as the Balangiga massacre, was a guerrilla attack that killed over 40 American soldiers. It took place in 1901, during the Philippine-American War.
